Pro-8 is the Japanese version of the Split-8. This inconspicuous instrument can be 8 note polyphonic, offers powerful 8 note unison and, in dual mode, you can layer two sounds for rich, 4 note polyphonic textures.

What is more, both sounds can be edited when in dual mode, so even though only one parametre can be changed at a time, sounds created can be very complex and versatile.

Even though it does not have separate controls for every parametre, programming the Pro-8 is very easy, thanks to very smart parametre-selection matrix. It’s definitely faster and more user friendly than Korg Poly 61 or Poly 800.

Very interesting feature of the Pro-8 is that it is bi-timbral, meaning each set of 4 voices can play its dedicated patch over its dedicated MIDI channel and has its own output and volume pot.

Q: Will the Pro-8 sound a bit like Prophet 5?

A: No, it does not make any sense whatsoever to think this way. Neither Pro-8 nor Prophet-600 will sound like a Prophet 5. They are different synths altogehter.

Q: How would would you describe the sound? I have heard that the heart of the instrument, the CEM 3394, is a weak sounding chip.

A: I tend to call the Pro-8 the ‘Mr. Hyde’ side of Juno-106. The 106 is fat, expansive, (even too) warm, while the Pro-8 is spookier, darker and offers much more complex sounds. They complete each other perfectly.

And the 3394 based synths in general? I totally disagree with those, who claim it’s a weak sounding, boring sound. Frankly, the SCI Six-Trak is one of the synths that I would call fun. The sounds its capable of sit very well together.

Q: Pro-8, Split-8, Japanese made, etc. What’s the deal? Is it a real Sequential?

A: It’s definitely a real sequential. Just like Oberheim did, Sequential also has a part of their synths produced in Japan. But ther are true SCIs, which is also confirmed by the nameplate.
